We have all been on the receiving side of unwanted and unsolicited feedback. It might be true. It might be false. Either way, we did not ask for it nor want it. Unwanted feedback can be very disorientating and disruptive. We all know we can't control the words of other people, so what do we do with unwanted feedback?
You might have heard Ken Blanchard say, “Feedback is the breakfast of champions.” Or, maybe you read the quote from Robert Allen, "There is no failure. Only feedback.”
While our heads may agree with these inspirational quotes, it's hard to get our hearts to align with them.
We're more likely to hear ourselves say:
"Feedback is to be avoided at all costs" or "There is no way I could ask for feedback—it's too risky.”
And when we get unwanted feedback, instead of embracing it, we might think these common thoughts:
"There is no way that's true.” "She thinks I am a bad ___ (mother, friend, co-worker etc.),” or "Who are you to say that to me?"
So . . . what are we to do with unwanted feedback?
